Transfer of Credit between McMaster CCE programs

Effective May 2018, students can use the same courses to build a maximum of two credentials (McMaster University Senate Policy on Diplomas and Certificates).

As per McMaster University Senate policy (May 2017), a course can be used no more than two times towards a McMaster University credential. At McMaster, the term credential refers to a certificate, a certificate of completion, a diploma, a MyOWNMcMaster milestone, and an undergraduate degree.

If you require more information, please be sure to contact us.

Diploma to Diploma (different CCE programs)

Unless specified otherwise within the program, students who complete a CCE diploma and wish to pursue a second diploma, may transfer up to twelve units of eligible credit from the first diploma to the second (one course is typically three units). Students may only transfer courses taken at CCE to a second diploma once. If the number of CCE courses being applied to the second diploma equals or exceeds the number of external transfer credits permitted in that program, additional external transfers will not be accepted. Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79.

Diploma to Certificate (different CCE programs)

Unless specified otherwise within the program, students who have completed a CCE diploma and wish to pursue a certificate in a different program, may transfer up to six units of eligible credit to the certificate (one course is typically three units). Students may only transfer courses taken at CCE once. If the number of CCE courses being transferred to the certificate equals or exceeds the number of external transfer credits permitted, additional external transfers will not be accepted. Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79.

Certificate to Certificate (different CCE programs)

Unless specified otherwise within the program, students who have completed a CCE certificate and wish to pursue a certificate in a different program, may transfer up to six units of eligible credit to the certificate (one course is typically three units). Students may only transfer courses taken at CCE once. If the number of CCE courses being transferred to the certificate equals or exceeds the number of external transfer credits permitted, additional external transfers will not be accepted. Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79.

Certificate to a Diploma (within the same CCE program)

Unless specified otherwise within the program, students who have completed a certificate and wish to continue and work toward a diploma within the same program, may apply all of the eligible certificate courses to the diploma. Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79.

Multiple Concentrations within the Diploma in Business Administration

Students who have completed the Diploma in the Business Administration program with a concentration (or general diploma) and wish to pursue a another credential within the program may do so only once. The courses may not be used beyond that. Students pursuing a second credential must take at least three unique courses in the new concentration area. Note: Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79 to pursue a second concentration.

Instead, we suggest students pursue a certificate or diploma in the subject areas directly (Human Resources Management Diploma or Marketing Certificate or Diploma, for instance).

Multiple Marketing Credentials

Students can use the same core courses to build a maximum of two credentials.

For example, a student may use the same courses to build a maximum of two credentials from the following:

  • Marketing Certificate
  • Marketing Diploma
  • Marketing Diploma with a concentration in Digital Marketing

Essentials Courses to Diploma in Business Administration

Up to a maximum of 9 units of eligible 1-or 2-day Essentials courses may be transferred towards elective credit in the Business Administration Diploma Program.  Students should notify the Business Administration Program Manager in writing of their intent to apply Essentials courses towards their Diploma. Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79 for a block of elective credit (up to 9 units).

Certificate of Completion in Risk Management to the Diploma in Business Administration

Students who have completed the Certificate of Completion in Risk Management and wish to pursue the Diploma in Business Administration will receive a block of 9 units of elective credit towards the Diploma. Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79.

Diploma in Health Information Management to Diploma in Health Informatics (or vice versa)

Students who complete the Diploma in Health Information Management or the Diploma in Health Informatics and wish to pursue the other, may apply the common “core” courses to the second diploma. Students may only transfer common courses once. If the number of common CCE courses being transferred to the second diploma equals or exceeds the number of external transfer credit permitted, additional external transfers will not be accepted. Students will be charged a one-time transfer fee of $79 to pursue the second diploma

NOTES:

  • Only courses completed within five (5) years of request for transfer of credit will be considered.
  • The Transfer of Credit Policy Between CCE Programs is subject to change without notice.
