Course Description:

Using a bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework, this course provides students with the foundational skills needed to accurately screen and assess addiction and compulsive behavior issues. Students will develop an individualized treatment plan that considers a client’s strengths and unique needs. Students will learn to develop effective clinical documentation and report writing skills.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will:

1. identify and compare theoretical and treatment approaches to addictive behaviour and how they influence the assessment process
examine the utilization of screening and assessment tools currently available taking into consideration specific populations
assess other life areas and risks associated with addiction
prepare a bio-psycho-social-spiritual assessment that includes a trauma-informed perspective
develop treatment plans, goals and interventions based on assessment
identify barriers that prevent successful goal attainment
develop documentation and report-writing skills needed for assessment and ongoing treatment

Course Format:

This course is offered online through our learning management system, Avenue to Learn. The
course material is divided into weekly modules through which the class will discuss the
concepts and develop skills and knowledge. You will be directed to the associated readings and
web resources.

Methods of Learning and Expectations

This course will promote a collaborative learning environment in which participants will
contribute and build upon their knowledge and understanding of the key issues raised. The
understanding of a topic or concept is a group activity and responsibility. Participants are
expected to express ideas openly, question, analyze, modify and raise the level of
understanding of the group. Students will articulate their thoughts and understanding online,
through a variety of activities. Learners are expected to contribute to the online course on a
regular basis throughout the week. The online course will be our classroom for the next 10

Assignment Submission:
Course assignments are submitted to the appropriate A2L Assignment folder by the specified due date
Late Coursework:
Assignments are recorded as received based on the date submitted to the Assignment Tool in
A2L.Late submissions will be penalized 2% per day (including weekends and holidays) up to
seven (7) days past the due date. After seven days, the Assignment Tool will close. No further
assignments will be accepted, and a grade of “0” will be assigned for the course work item.
Requests for extensions must be submitted to the Instructor before the assignment due date.
Extensions are permitted for exceptional circumstances only; supporting documentation may
be requested. Once the course end date has passed, a final grade will be forwarded to the
Office of the Registrar based on the assignments that were submitted. A zero is assigned for
unsubmitted work.

students make every effort to meet the originally scheduled course requirements and it is a

expected to attend and complete the specific course requirements (i.e. attendance,
assignments, and tests/exams) listed in the course outline on or by the date specified.

Students who need to discuss possible extension or interrupted study, as a result of medical,
personal or family reasons, must contact the Program Manager prior to the originally
scheduled due date. Failure to contact the Program Manager, or denial of an extended due
date, will result in the late policy being applied and no further consideration will be granted.
