This course covers fundamental theories and principles of health information management including data types, data acquisition, data repositories, records management and data collection and use. Principles, frameworks, policies, and processes to manage records and documents will be covered including an overview of documentation legislation, professional practice guidelines for documentation standards, error detection and correction procedures, and acceptability of medical abbreviations and acronyms. Concepts of Electronic Health Record (EHR), Personal Health Record (PHR), Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and Electronic Patient Record (EPR) will be introduced. Students will learn about the overall structure of the Canadian health system and health data and information repositories as well as interactions between the Canadian health system and the Ministries, research, and public health.
