  • Simply put, Big Data Analytics is more advanced. Big Data Analytics requires a degree or diploma in a STEM (science, tech, engineering, math) field and work experience in technology and data analysis. You would be a fit if you are working in a STEM field and have done some data analysis work, but you want to upgrade to a level where you can use advanced techniques to analyze big data.

    Foundations of Analytics welcomes people without this strong background in STEM who want to break into a field working with technology and data or want to do more analytics as part of their current job.

  • If you lack academic background but have three years’ experience then you would be approved. Otherwise you would be eligible to enroll in Foundations of Analytics. In order to be admitted to the Big Data Analytics program, you must have:

    1. - Equivalent academic experience, such as a university degree and/or college diploma with relevant coursework in mathematics, computer science, science, engineering or business with a minimum cumulative GPA or C- or better;
    2. - Three years relevant professional experience in data analytics or a related field;
    3. - Be a mature student;
    4. - Be deemed an exceptional case, or;
    5. - Have experience working with Python and R programming languages

  • Yes, but Foundations of Analytics might be a better option for you. In order to be admitted to the Big Data Analytics program, you must have:

  • You can start with our entry level program called Foundation of Analytics. After you’ve completed the Foundations of Analytics Certificate you could look into applying for the Big Data Analytics program.

  • In order to be admitted to the Big Data Analytics program, you must have:

  • The Big Data Analytics program is available every Fall (September start), Winter (January start) and Spring (May start) terms. Refer to our Schedule & Fees page for specific dates.

  • This program requires an application before you can enroll. Please refer to the Big Data Application page to learn more about application dates and process.

  • Students must complete all five core courses and one capstone course in order to qualify for the Certificate in Big Data Analytics. Courses are:

    1. - BDA 101 Data Analytics & Modelling
    2. - BDA 102 Big Data Analytics
    3. - BDA 103 Data Management
    4. - BDA 104 Predictive Modelling & Data Mining
    5. - BDA 105 Big Data Programming
    6. - BDA 106 Big Data Analytics Capstone Project Course (a capstone course is intended to simulate real-world experience that offers an applied synthesis of learning)

  • You may be eligible to receive transfer of credit from preview post-secondary studies and receive advanced standing in the Big Data Analytics program. Please refer to our Transfer Credit Conditions for more details.

  • The program is completed in-person with the capstone project course delivered in a blended format (a mix of online and in-person sessions). Each course is scheduled for a weekly, three-hour session and typically span 12-weeks. Many of our students take between one to two courses per term. The program should be completed within three years.

  • The Big Data Analytics program offers two different learning formats: in-person or blended.

    1. - In-Person format requires you to meet at our downtown Hamilton campus once per week for three hours over the span of 12 weeks per course.
    2. - The capstone course is delivered in a blended format that requires you to meet with your instructor and classmates each week online, as well as in-person as per the schedule throughout the term at our downtown Hamilton campus.

  • The Big Data Analytics program was designed in collaboration with McMaster University’s MacDATA Institute and the DeGroote School of Business. The Certificate in Big Data Analytics gives you the tools and techniques to help guide organizations in the exploding and complicated field of big data and predictive analytics. You’ll learn technical concepts from leading practitioners and benefit from hands-on training with the latest industry tools.
