Admission Requirements


Diploma in Accounting

To be admitted to the Diploma in Accounting program, applicants must have:

  • an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent;
  • be a mature student as defined in the Undergraduate Calendar of McMaster University; or
  • be deemed an exceptional case.

Certificate in Advanced Accounting

The Certificate in Advanced Accounting is open to individuals with post-secondary education who have completed introductory and intermediate level financial and management accounting courses (equivalent to ACC 925, ACC 926, ACC 927, ACC 928 and ACC 929) outside of McMaster Continuing Education prior to beginning the Certificate.

Open Enrolment

This Diploma in Accounting and Certificate in Advanced Accounting is open enrolment programs. There is no formal admission procedure. To enrol in a course or the program, simply register online. Please ensure to meet any/all posted course pre-requisites. Students should register at least three weeks before classes begin. Courses can be taken as part of a program or individually. 

Note: Graduates of the Diploma in Accounting are not eligible for the Certificate in Advanced Accounting. Graduates of the Certificate in Advanced Accounting are not eligible for the Diploma in Accounting.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

If your first language is not English, you must meet the university’s English language proficiency requirements.

Microsoft Excel 

Accounting requires varying degrees of proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Basic knowledge in Microsoft Excel is recommended to be successful in the courses listed below.
